Diabetes Mellitus -Types, Symptoms & Risk Factors

Table of Contents

Diabetes Mellitus is a condition in which the amount of glucose (Sugar) in the blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly.

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps the glucose to enter the cells where it is used as fuel by the body. A person with diabetes may not have enough insulin or the insulin that the body makes may not work as well as it should.  This causes the blood sugar level to go off balance and become too high.

Main types of Diabetes:

  1. Type 1 Diabetes: Approximately, 5-10% of the diabetics have type 1 diabetes mellitus. Usually affects children and adolescents.
  2. Type 2 Diabetes: Type 2 diabetes develops when the body can still make some insulin, but not enough or when the insulin that is produced does not work properly ( Known as insulin resistance). Approximately 90-95% of the diabetics have type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  3. Gestational Diabetes: Some women experience a rise in their blood glucose level during pregnancy. This condition is called gestational diabetes.

Symptoms :

Symptoms of Diabetes are increased urination, increased thirst, tiredness/fatigue, slow healing of wounds, blurring of vision, weight loss, excessive hunger, eating.
