Procedure

Step1 – This procedure is done with the patient in a sitting position. The capsule is placed in the posterior aspect of the tongue and person is asked to swallow it with a glass of water. The position of the capsule is confirmed by radiology as the catheter is opaque

Step2 – As soon as the balloon reaches the stomach, the vegan capsule disintegrates within few minutes and the balloon unfolds. The balloon is inflated through the catheter with a company provided fluid. Once the balloon is inflated, another X-ray is taken to confirm the position. A tug is given on the tubing which detaches from the balloon and the balloon lies freely in the stomach.

How long does this balloon stay in the stomach and how is it removed?

Swallow balloon capsule is totally time activated. The balloon is supposed to remain in the stomach for approximately 4 months. By this time, the instilled fluid causes the release valve film on the balloon to disintegrate. The fluid starts to release slowly and could take approximately 7 -8 days to completely deflate. Once the balloon is fully deflated, it is passed out through the intestine and is excreted in the faeces.
