Liposuction, also called lipoplasty or simply lipo, is a procedure of removing fat deposits, localised to certain parts of the body, to improve the body figure and proportion. It is highly useful in site specific fat removal which does not respond to diet, pilates or exercise. It is done under local or general anaesthesia.
Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. You would need to have a strong grip on diet and exercise to remain in shape and sustain the benefits of the procedure. Liposuction can be performed as a standalone procedure or as an adjunct with cosmetic procedures like face lift, breast reduction or tummy tuck.
Liposuction can be used for site specific fat reduction at the following areas of the body:-
- Waist and abdomen
- Hips and buttocks
- Inner knees
- Upper arms
- Ankles and calves
- Chest area
- Face – cheeks, chin (correcting double chin)
Liposuction is not used as a treatment for obesity. It is mostly considered to be a cosmetic procedure. It cannot be used to treat just loose or saggy skin or for the removal of cellulites (the dimples in skin that are found on hips, thighs or buttocks).
What are its advantages?
Liposuction is popular today for the various advantages of the procedure. Liposuction can be considered as a one stop solution which helps in reshaping all the misshaped areas of the body. It helps in the treatment of large areas in a single procedure. They are known to have a better and consistent result than other conventional or non invasive treatment methods.
