Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty

About Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty

This is a non-surgical, scarless, completely endoscopic weight-loss procedure done by using an endoscope with no external incision on the body. In this procedure, the large capacious stomach is converted into a narrow tube mimicking the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy endoscopically, thus decreasing the volume of the stomach.

Procedure-

This procedure called the Accordion procedure involves introducing a suturing device on a highly specialised flexible endoscope to place sutures in the stomach in order to reduce its size. It is done under anaesthesia. With the help of the suturing device, small accordion like folds are stitched inside the stomach to reduce the length and size. The reduced size of the stomach makes the patient feel full faster with decreased intake of food.

Once diagnostic endoscopy is done, areas on the inner part of the stomach are marked with diathermy. Sutures are then taken in a pre determined fashion, making sure they are full thickness. A device called the helix helps to pickup the stomach wall to take sutures. Depending on the length of the stomach, the number of stitches to be taken will vary. It could be between 5-7 stitches. Good number of sutures will ensure a secure approximation and construction of a good strong sleeve, adequate enough to induce weight loss.
